Chapel Hill’s quaint Southern Village mixed-use community will soon be adding hotel amenities to the mix.
The new Hyatt Place hotel is scheduled to open May 2.
The 110-room, five-story hotel was approved by the town in late 2013, but Southern Village developer D.R. Bryan has had tentative plans to add a hotel to the community since Southern Village’s early days of construction in the mid-1990s.
The $16 million hotel, located near the entrance into Southern Village from U.S. 15-501, will be within walking distance of its Market Street merchants with Weaver Street Market, Lumina Theatre and other restaurants and businesses.
“We consider the new hotel an economic development project that will benefit tourists and travelers, residents, and the business community,” Bryan said in a statement about the hotel project. The Hyatt Place Chapel Hill/Southern Village property will feature a sculpture by local artist Jeff Hackney and custom photography by Kalisher, a Carrboro-based art company. Beacon Properties of Charlotte will be managing the hotel.
